At some time in a cats life it will have fleas; it is unfortunately unavoidable.  Ask at your Veterinary surgery to recommend a good flea spray for your cat and also a spray for use around your house and on carpets, and Hoover well.  It is useless to treat your cat but not your house.  Because most homes are centrally heated, fleas can now be an all year round problem, not just in the hot summer months.  After spraying your cat, wash his bedding.  If your cat is terrified of being sprayed, secretly spray a four inch square of cotton wool.  Then sit down with him and wipe the fur, keeping well away from the eyes and under the tail.  This will have the same effect as spraying direct onto your cat.
