This is the most important decision when you are thinking about getting a cat.  If you have very young children it would be best to consider having an older cat rather than a kitten.  Young children want to hug and cuddle their pets, and kittens are very fragile and can be easily hurt.  A young neutered cat would be the ideal choice.  An elderly person may also benefit from having an older cat, kittens can get under the feet and can easily cause a fall.  Also perhaps consider a pair of cats - as they would be good company for each other.
